To Charge or Not to Charge

To Charge or Not to Charge

So often, as a freelance paralegal, I get asked the question: “Should I charge for this service or not?

And listen—the beauty of being a freelance paralegal is that you get to dictate and answer that question yourself. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Everyone determines their own parameters and how they want their business to operate.

Much like most law firms, your time is billable—but how you use that time says a lot about the business you’re trying to build.

Freelance paralegals understand the ethical boundaries they must uphold, and they don’t cross that line. At the same time, they also understand that doing business with clients requires a level of flexibility—a little give and take that allows relationships to grow and continue.

Some freelance paralegals charge for everything, regardless of the outcome. Others prefer flat fees and stick to that structure. And that’s okay. There is no single “right” way to do it.

Personally, I’ve found myself in situations where things may not have been completed as timely or as accurately as I would have liked—and in those moments, I didn’t feel it was appropriate to charge. That wasn’t a rule I had to follow, but it was a standard I set for myself.

And that’s really what this comes down to—your standard.

There are no strict guidelines when it comes to how you price your services as a freelance paralegal. What matters is that your approach aligns with your values, your integrity, and the type of client experience you want to create.

Are you building a business rooted in precision and premium service?
Are you focused on accessibility and long-term relationships?
Are you somewhere in between?

Your pricing model should reflect that.

At the end of the day, charging—or not charging—isn’t just a financial decision. It’s a business decision. It’s a brand decision. And most importantly, it’s a reflection of how you see your role and your worth in this industry.

So take that freedom, and truly shape the way you want your business to run.
