Staying stationary and working solely at one’s desk is a thing of a past. As we’ve known for decades, humans need to move in order to thrive. Sitting is a big part of the legal industry especially for Paralegals. We get desks that raise up and down or under the desk treadmills to counter the effects but lets be real. The best way to work is somewhere on a beach.
So what does a paralegal need to travel and work leisurely besides PTO and sunblock? Well, to be frank a few items. However anything is possible with some research, a little trial and error and lots of items from Amazon.
First, you need a computer. If you are traveling somewhere already equpped with a desktop you’re good. If not, you need a good laptop. I am not sure if this has been stressed to my paralegal readers but I find anything besides an Apple computer works best.
Second, you want to set yourself up to be able to work without interruption so wifi is needed. If you are in a place equipped with strong wifi you are good. Most traveling paralegals understand this is a must. If you need, invest in a hotspot. Remember to be cautious about whether or not you may be restricted to a certain amount of time.
Third, I prefer working with two monitors, especially on days that I have a bunch of tasks due. The beauty about this is there are lightweight portable monitors that you can order from Amazon. That way, you can have a few things going at once without spending time minimizing your screen. Now, should you prefer one screen, by all means continue with one. This is simply a suggestion for those who may prefer an additional monitor. Also, if do find yourself working by the pool or outside, you might want to invest in an anti-glare screen protector. Again, this can be found on Amazon.
While we are on the subject of equipment, lets not forget a portable mouse to use in the event your laptop is your main source. I find when traveling for long periods of time and using only my laptop that sometimes my wrist needs a break. Again, this article is about traveling and leisure so why not add the mouse to your checklist.
Lastly, we can’t avoid conversations completely (unfortunately). Sometimes a client or attorney will call us at the most inconvenient time. Of course, not answering is always an option but If you are by the ocean and in need of more quiet to answer a call, look into purchasing noise canceling earbuds. It’s a small luxury to pack that will save you the headache of not being able to hear the person on the other end.
While this list of items can go on and on, I want to also mention one more tool to invest in. If you plan on being in a hot climate on your laptop look into laptop cooling pads. Much like humans, we all know computers, machines, cellphones etc. can overheat. Because we want to travel and work in leisure, worrying about our laptop overheating should not be a thing.
Hope you found this hopeful. If you have any additional items you would like us to share please feel free to reach out to us!
