How to be Productive on a Slow Day

Let’s be honest, as a professional paralegal you never really have a slow day. Truthfully, there are days that are slower, like on a holiday for example. On a day like today, shout out to all the veterans by the way! When most of the courts and other law firms are closed, the phone is not ringing off the hook, it’s nice to use the “down” day as a catch up day.

Be Proactive

Paralegal work is very deadline-driven. Take some extra time to look ahead and be detail-oriented. Focus on future activities by making sure you received confirmation from clients, updated that pleading index and players list for that one file that everyone hates to touch, make sure you’ve uploaded all exhibits needed for the next mediation. The list can go on and on. The end result will be, goals are met and disasters are averted which is an undeniable must in our legal careers.

Be a Team Player

Ask someone if they need help with a case they are working on. When you offer to help someone you might not only gain a new friend but you will end up learning something new. Interacting with other people in the same field can help forge a new connection and will help you stay up to date on what’s expected from you.

Take a CLE

Each time you decide you want to learn something new you are investing in your professional career. If you’ve reach your billable hours for the day, think about investing some time and of course some pocket change, in a CLE. Maybe there is new career development workshop or a new program out that can be useful for what you do. The point is, you will never know unless you enroll.
