Getting Back to Work After the Holidays

Correct me if I am wrong but getting back to work after a holiday is a daunting task. Whether it means replying to those emails you ignored, having to mentally prepare to talk to a few too many Karens or simply having to raise and shine at the crack of dawn again. Going back to work after have a few days off is tough! Even though 2020 has not afforded most of us the opportunity of a “regular” routine anymore, the little stability that we do have can feel as though it is interrupted after a holiday break. So what can you do to balance that feeling of disconcertment and expectation to put your best face forward at the start of a new work week?

Stop and Take a Deep Breath

Practicing deep breathing is a hack a lot of experts and psychologists swear by to treat anxious thoughts and nervousness in a jiffy. Deep breathing slows down your heart rate, allows the body to take in more oxygen and ultimately signals the brain to wind down. It also balances your hormones- lowering down cortisol levels, increasing endorphin rush in the body. Inhaling, exhaling a few deep breaths every day could make a drastic improvement in your lifestyle.

Exercise

In the same as vein as taking a deep breath, exercise can lower your anxiety levels and clarify the mind. Sometimes, the mere feeling of having to get back into the swing of confusion and chaos can create a feeling of anxiety. This will lead to the feeling of dread and even sadness. Counter those feelings by getting in a workout. Plan to work out the morning that you return back to work. It does not have to be a full blown 45 minute workout. You can simply get up and go for a walk or turn to that favorite at home exercise program you love and just get the body moving. Physical activity stimulates the release of varies hormones including serotonin. This chemical plays an important positive part in regulating your mood.

Get Dressed

Okay, I know how super comfy PJ’s and those Christmas onesies can be….but it’s time to get dressed. Put on that outfit that fits just right, or simply makes you feel good, even if it is a sweatpants outfit. When you are dressed and feeling good it will boost your confidence. This will boost your ability to perform at a higher level and also help you mentally prepare for any excess work that might be thrown at you. Your confidence level plays a major role in your performance level at work. If simply wearing some clothes that makes me feel good can boost that, I am all for it.

Eat Breakfast

Make time to eat! fuel the body and allow yourself some time to enjoy your food before you are carried out of the serenity of your home and whisked away into the abyss of your 9 to 5. Remember, a 5 star meal is not required. I am not asking you to play chef before walking out the door. Just make sure you are eating something.

Affirm

Remember, you are not alone. Getting back into the work mindset after being off a few days can require some small affirmations like “I can do this” or “It will be okay” .
