I get it, Paralegals live and die by their computers. We are literally tied to our computer by the wayside. From last minute filings to verifying client information our whole career depends on being on a computer. But can you function without a Laptop? Simply put….yes. Let me clarify further. I’m not referring to your home office or office computer because yes some of us, such as myself, do use laptops as our main computer but once you leave the office or go on vacation you can work and still be laptop free. How you ask? Well here’s what I do.
Apps
Yes you read that right. I use a lot of apps on my smart phones that are work related. If your firm uses a CMS for their recordkeeping that system more than likely has an app. If it does not you can easily turn the homepage into an app on your smart phone with your login and password information stored. This will allow you to log in and check information quick and easy without opening a laptop.
Time Management
Managing your time as a paralegal is imperative right? Everything we do basically goes into two columns…Billable Work and Non-Billable Work. The “Billable” column should outweigh the non-billable side without a doubt. Unless there is a trial or something major that pops up we should be able to manage our caseload within our designated work hours. When you are able to manage your time, there is no need to work after hours on your laptop. In some cases, working ahead of designated time frames has a duel purposes. When you manage your workload effectively, there’s no need to burn the midnight oil with a laptop after hours. If you stay ahead of deadlines, you’ll find yourself breezing through tasks without being tethered to your computer.
Sync and Automate
Here’s the real game-changer—syncing your workflow. Calendar apps, document editing tools, and communication platforms all have mobile versions. When they’re synced across devices, you can pick up right where you left off, even if it’s from your phone. You don’t need a laptop to schedule client meetings, review documents, or even send reminders. Everything can be done with just a few taps.
So, next time someone asks how you survive without lugging around your laptop, you can smile and say, “I’ve got an app for that.” Whether you’re sipping coffee at a beach café or squeezing in a quick errand between meetings, you’re covered. Paralegal life doesn’t stop, but neither should your freedom to work smarter, not harder. Who knew going laptop-free could feel this light?
